ACCION

ACCION
International's mission is to give people the tools they
need to work their way out of poverty. By providing small
or "micro" loans and business training to poor
women and men who start their own businesses, ACCION's
microcredit affiliates help people work their way up the
economic ladder, with dignity and pride. With
"micro" loans, these hardworking people can grow
their businesses and earn enough to afford basics like
running water, better food and schooling for their
children. ACCION's network, which works in 14 Latin
American countries and ten U.S. cities, has made $2.2
billion in loans as small as $100 to over 1.6 million
people. Ninety-eight percent of the loans have been
repaid. |

Citizen
Schools |
Citizen
Schools seeks to educate children and build community in
Boston through excellent after-school and summer programs,
engaging 9 to 14 year old children and adult volunteers
from a variety of professional backgrounds. The heart of
the program is an apprenticeship curriculum in which
children work directly with Boston's best professionals,
artisans, and trades people to develop high-quality
products and performances that meet real community needs.
Students develop confidence, skills, and understanding as
they publish newspapers and web pages, organize community
health fairs, write and produce plays, cook gourmet meals,
and much, much more. Apprentices also participate in
sports, explorations, team-building activities, and
community service -- all led by a talented program staff.
Citizen Schools, which has ten campuses in Boston
locations, is a national model for excellence in
out-of-school programs and has been featured in the

Our Strength |
Share Our
Strength is motivated by a simple, but powerful philosophy
-- it takes more than food to fight hunger. It takes
short- and long-term solutions and each one of us sharing
our unique talents and skills to make a difference.
Today, more than 34 million Americans, many of them
children, are at risk of hunger. Hunger leads to
malnutrition, which impairs children's ability to learn,
focus and grow mentally and physically. Since our founding
in 1984, Share Our Strength has distributed more than $55
million to more than 1,000 local, state, national and
international agencies addressing these critical needs.
Help us break the cycle of hunger and poverty.

Teach
For America |
Teach For
America expands the educational opportunities of
low-income youth by providing talented teachers committed
to meeting their needs and leaders dedicated to changing
social conditions that perpetuate educational inequality.
We recruit a corps of outstanding college graduates to
make a two-year commitment to teach under-served youth as
the start of a lifelong commitment to educational reform.
After five weeks of dawn-till-dusk training in our summer
institute, under-resourced public schools hire them on the
same basis as other alternately certified teachers. During
their corps service, Teach For America supports their
professional development. Afterward, our alumni
association fosters their continued involvement in
education. |
